History

The Faculty of Law at Brawijaya University was originally named the College of Law and Social Sciences (PTHPM), established on July 1, 1957, at the initiative of the Malang Higher Education Foundation (YPTM). Over time, with the approval of the Municipal Council of Malang, PTHPM was recognized as an institution belonging to the Municipality of Malang and became part of the Municipal University of Malang. The official recognition took place on July 1, 1960, during the third-anniversary celebration of PTHPM. In 1961, the Municipal University of Malang, which at that time had three faculties—Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business Administration (later renamed the Faculty of Administrative Sciences), and Faculty of Agriculture—changed its name to Brawijaya University. Additionally, a new faculty was added through the merger with the Faculty of Economics, which had been established by the Malang Economic Higher Education Foundation (YPTEM) in 1957. Eventually, YPTM and YPTEM merged to form the Brawijaya University Foundation of Malang. Brawijaya University was officially nationalized on January 5, 1963, through the Minister of Higher Education and Science Decree No. 1 of 1963. Since then, the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences (FHPM) at Brawijaya University became one of the state law faculties in East Java. In accordance with the policy to reorganize faculties under Government Regulation No. 27 of 1981, the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences (FHPM) was renamed the Faculty of Law at Brawijaya University through Presidential Decree No. 59 of 1982, dated September 7, 1982. In 1995, the Faculty of Law opened an extension program for undergraduate studies, officially authorized by the Directorate General of Higher Education (Dirjen Dikti) Decree No. 62/DIKTI/Kep/1999, regarding the establishment of the Extension Program in the Legal Studies Program at the Faculty of Law. In 2003, based on the Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 28/DIKTI/Kep/2002, this extension program was integrated into the regular program. In 1997, the Master's Program (S2) in Law was established, authorized by the Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 72/DIKTI/Kep/1997. Furthermore, in the 2001/2002 academic year, the Doctoral Program (S3) in Law was inaugurated, following the issuance of a permit from the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 2365/D/T/2001 on July 11, 2001.
