International Conference & Colloquium 2024

hosted by
Faculty of Law Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia (FH UB),
Fakulti Undang Undang Universitas Kebangsaan Malaysia (FUU UKM),

Background

The phenomenon of human rights and the rule of law is intrinsically linked to the foundational principles of democratic societies. At its core, the rule of law posits that laws should govern a nation, as opposed to arbitrary decisions by individual government officials. This principle ensures that all individuals and institutions are accountable to laws that are publicly promulgated, equally enforced, and independently adjudicated. The synergy between human rights and the rule of law is essential because the rule of law provides the structural framework within which human rights are defined, protected, and enforced.

The conference on “Human Rights & the Rule of Law” aspires to convene preeminent scholars, legal practitioners, policymakers, and human rights advocates to deliberate on the multifaceted challenges and evolving paradigms that underpin human rights and the rule of law in today’s global context. This seminal event will feature keynote addresses by renowned experts, providing incisive analyses and perspectives on pivotal issues such as the safeguarding of civil liberties, the equitable administration of justice, and the interplay between international human rights norms and domestic legal frameworks. Through a series of meticulously curated panel discussions, participants will have the opportunity to engage in rigorous debates, share empirical insights, and collaboratively explore innovative legal and policy solutions to fortify the global human rights architecture. The conference’s sub-themes include “Human Rights and Constitutional Law,” which will examine how constitutional frameworks can be leveraged to protect human rights effectively. “Administrative Law and Good Governance” will explore the mechanisms by which administrative law can promote transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in governance. “Criminal Justice Reform” will address the urgent need for reforms in the criminal justice system to ensure fairness and protect human rights. “Law and Sustainability” will highlight the intersection between legal frameworks and sustainable development goals. “Investment and Private Law” will scrutinize the impact of private law on investment and the protection of human rights within the commercial sphere. Finally, “Comparative Law and Judiciary” will provide a platform for analyzing different judicial systems and their approaches to upholding the rule of law and human rights.

Beyond the plenary sessions, the conference will offer a suite of specialized workshops and interactive seminars aimed at enhancing the practical competencies and theoretical acumen of attendees. These workshops will delve into critical areas such as the application of international legal instruments to redress human rights violations, the essential role of judicial independence in maintaining the integrity of the rule of law, and strategies for embedding human rights principles into the fabric of public policy and governance. By fostering an environment conducive to high-level discourse and knowledge exchange, the conference seeks to galvanize collective efforts within the international community to advance human rights protections and uphold the rule of law as a cornerstone of just and democratic societies.
