Public Discussion: Human Rights and Launching Research “Role of Human Rights Commission"

Faculty of Law Brawijaya University held a public discussion on “Against Forgetting: Human Rights Agenda In 2014 election” on Wednesday (23/4) at the Faculty of Law Building 6th floor. This event was organized by the Impartial, PP-OTODA, and Forkom FH UB. This discussion presents a speaker Dr. Ali Syafaat (Constitutional Law Expert), Suciwati (human rights activist), and Swandaru (Researcher of IMPARSIAL).

The background of this discussion agenda is the political changes in 1998 that has brought changes to the setting of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) in Indonesia. Lunge Commission initially only by Presidential Decree (Decree) No. 50 of 1993, has been strengthened along with the enactment of Law No. 39 Year 1999 on Human Rights (Human Rights Act). Although the legal position stronger Human Rights Commission, Human Rights Commission often gets a lot of attention. Therefore this discussion further would like to discuss the enforcement of human rights that have been done so far.

Further Ngesti D. Prasetyo S.H. M.H, PP OTODA as the Executive Director explained that the event was meant to remind the government that there is an agenda of human rights enforcement is still not resolved by the government. Ngesti give examples there are several cases of human rights has not been completed by the Government as the case of Munir, Tanjung Priok case. “This event tries to give an overview of the human rights issues that have not been completed for the new government after the parliamentary elections in 2014” he added

In the discussion held at the same time launching a study “Evaluation of the Commission’s role in the Reformation” There are two things that were examined in this study are: 1. Employment Commission working in a period of reform in the enforcement and protection of human rights 2. Barriers faced faced by the Commission in carrying out its work. (tan)
